How to Find the Right Wedding Muhurat (and Why Pandits Give Different Dates)
Published · Updated
Your wedding muhurat should be one date both families trust, right for your two kundalis and your wedding city, and settled in time to book the venue. Tarini works it out from both your birth details, picks the strongest lagna, and delivers it within a few hours.
Last updated: 22 October 2026
The venue wants an answer this week. The bride's family pandit suggests one date; the groom's family pandit suggests another.
Wait too long and the wedding venue goes to someone else. Pick in a hurry and you may begin your marriage on a date that was never right for you two.
Find your shubh muhurat from both your birth details and your city
Your shubh wedding muhurat is a date that suits a wedding, suits both your kundalis, and has a pure lagna in your wedding city. Tarini checks all three for every date in your window.
A date that is shubh for everyone can still be wrong for you two.
1. The day must suit a wedding
The tithi, nakshatra, weekday, yoga and karana must all favour a marriage, and the month must be open for weddings. The weekday must be Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. The day must also be free of the baanas that harm a marriage (Roga, Raja and Mrityu).
Venus and Jupiter must not be combust (Shukra asta, Guru asta). A date that fails here is out, whatever else it has going for it.
2. The day must suit both of you
A panchang your cousin married on can still be wrong for you two. Tarini checks it against the bride and groom's charts:
- Tara bala: the day's nakshatra, counted from each birth nakshatra
- Chandra bala: the Moon's position from each Moon sign
- Graha shuddhi: Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon from each Moon sign
So the date you get is shubh for your marriage.
3. The time must suit your wedding city
The lagna changes about every two hours, and it depends on where you marry. The lagna rising in Delhi at 8 pm is not the one rising in London at that moment.
So a London wedding gets a London muhurat, on its own local date, not Delhi's timings copied across.
Everything checked for a wedding date
| What is checked | What the shastras ask for |
|---|---|
| Sun's month | The Sun in Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Vrishchika, Makara or Kumbha. Only the first part of Ashadha is open, and the texts disagree on it. |
| Closed periods | Adhik maas, Kharmas (the Sun in Dhanu or Meena), Pitru Paksha, Holashtaka in north India, Guru or Shukra asta with the few days either side, and Guru Simhastha (Jupiter in Simha) where it is observed, lifted when the Sun is in Mesha. |
| Eclipses | The three days before an eclipse are avoided. |
| Tithi | The rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th), Amavasya and the month's shunya tithis are avoided. |
| Weekday | Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. |
| Nakshatra | Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati. The month's shunya nakshatras, the opening ghatis of the fierce nakshatras and each nakshatra's vishghati are avoided. |
| Yoga and karana | Vyatipata, Vaidhriti and Vishti (Bhadra) karana are avoided, and so is a sankranti that falls in Vishti, Shakuni, Chatushpada or Naga karana. |
| Weekday combinations | The Dagdha, Visha, Hutashana, Krakacha, Yamaghanta, Mrityu, Utpata, Kana, Samvartaka and Madhu-sarpi yogas are avoided, and so is Guru Pushya (the Amrit or Sarvartha Siddhi yoga of Thursday with Pushya). |
| Nakshatra and tithi pairs | The pairs the texts name as doshas, such as Magha on a panchami or Mula on a saptami, are avoided. |
| Panchashalaka chakra | No vedha on the day's nakshatra: no malefic planet may pierce it along the lines of the Panchashalaka chakra. |
| Sarvatobhadra chakra | None of its ten Dasha-yogas: wind, clouds, fire, king's punishment, theft, death, disease, lightning, quarrel and loss. |
| Muhurta | The muhurtas each weekday forbids (such as Abhijit on a Wednesday) and the kulika muhurtas are avoided. |
| Lagna | A strong lagna with no malefic in it, no malefics on both sides of it (Papa Kartari), no debilitated malefic in the 5th, and no Mars in the 7th from a malefic lagna. |
| Baana | Roga, Raja and Mrityu baana rule a lagna out. Agni, Chora and Sashalya baana are avoided where possible. |
| The Moon at the wedding | Not in the 6th or 8th from the lagna, not in the lagna with Mars in the 7th, not aspected by a malefic, not with Mars or with two malefics, not hemmed in by malefics, no malefic in the 7th from it, and in a favourable avastha. The Moon with Jupiter is best and with Mercury good; with the Sun, Venus or Saturn it is avoided. |
| Bride and Groom tara bala | Counted from each birth star, the Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha taras are avoided. |
| Bride and Groom graha shuddhi | The Moon in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th or 11th, Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th, and the Sun in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th from each Moon sign, with every planet's transit read with its vedha. A birth nakshatra on a Tuesday or Saturday is avoided. |
Why pandits and websites give you different dates
Pandits and websites give different wedding dates when they work for a different city, follow a different month system, use a general list instead of your kundalis, or follow a different classical text.
Two different dates usually come from two different questions:
| Reason | What changes |
|---|---|
| A different city | Sunrise, tithi timings and the lagna |
| A different month system | Amanta (month ends on Amavasya) or purnimanta (month ends on Purnima) |
| A general list vs your list | A list for everyone skips both partners' kundalis |
| A different classical text | The texts weigh some factors differently |
The date that counts is the one worked out for your city and both your kundalis.
The rules are defined, so a convenient date is a risky one. See every recommended date on the 2026 and 2027 vivah muhurat dates pages.
You can show both families the verse behind your date. The classical texts name the wedding nakshatras in this shloka:
निर्वेधैः शशिकरमूलमैत्रपित्र्यब्राह्मान्त्योत्तरपवनैः शुभो विवाहः । रिक्तामारहिततिथौ शुभेऽह्नि … "Marriage is auspicious in Mrigashira, Hasta, Mula, Anuradha, Magha, Rohini, Revati, the three Uttaras and Swati, when free of vedha; on a tithi other than the riktas and Amavasya; on an auspicious day." (Muhurta Chintamani 6.55)
Where the texts differ, Tarini weighs both and quotes both. Where texts conflict, Tarini adjusts for it, so you are assured that you are recommended the most shubh muhurat.
Everything is transparent. When the same weekday and tithi form a favourable yoga and one to avoid at once, Tarini shows you both and weighs them.
When the shubh dates don't fit your venue or families
A short list of dates may not always match the venue's free dates. When none of them fits the hall, the guests or everyone's leave, you are back to waiting.
Tarini gives you every shubh date and time in the period. Hold it next to the venue's free dates and you can book the same day.
Speed matters as much as the date. Tarini delivers your muhurat within a few hours, so the booking, the cards and the preparations move ahead while the date you want is still free.
Settle every ceremony in one go. The complete wedding muhurat set gives you all four, with no second round of waiting:
- Sagai: the engagement
- Vivah: the wedding itself
- Vadhu pravesh: the bride's first entry into her new home
- Pag phera: the bride's first visit back
Panditji, an astrologer, or an online muhurat - who do I trust?
Our recommendation: ask an astrologer whether to marry now, and ask Tarini when. They answer two different questions, one after the other.
First, should we marry, and is this the right period? Ask an astrologer
For advice on whether you should marry, whether you are compatible, and whether marriage is advised in your current dashas, consult an astrologer. Reading your kundalis, dashas and yogas, they can say which period of life suits your marriage.
Then, on which date and at what time? Ask Tarini
Consult Tarini for the right muhurat: the date and time you should marry. For the date and the time of the wedding, Tarini gives you:
- Every possible date and time in the period
- Within a few hours, before the venue is lost
- Both partners' kundalis checked for every date
- Every lagna in the period weighed, down to the 48-minute muhurat
What if our family has a learned Panditji?
If your family has a very learned Panditji, trust them. India has many scholars of jyotish and lineages trained as raj jyotish.
Tarini brings every family a muhurat election equal to that of the most learned Pandits in the country.
Can you trust an online muhurat?
You can trust Tarini. Tarini is the only platform that recommends the muhurat from the shastras and quotes the shloka behind each recommendation, so you see why your date was chosen, not just the date.

Two good dates: how the strongest one is chosen
Two good dates? Tarini tells you which is stronger. Tarini ranks them by strength, in this order:
- Remove every restricted date (combust Venus or Jupiter, closed months, dates to avoid).
- Keep the panchangs the shastras recommend for weddings: tithi, nakshatra, weekday and yoga.
- Elect the lagnas the shastras recommend for weddings within those dates.
- Check each lagna for lagna shuddhi, the Moon's strength, and the planets against both partners' birth charts.
- Weigh the lagna's strength, the lagna lord, and any malefic influence on the lagna or on Venus, with every other condition the shastras prescribe.
- Calculate the 48-minute muhurat within the pure lagna, and recommend the best dates and times.
The result? Your top 3 wedding muhurats, ranked, with exact times and the reason #1 is #1. Hold them against the venue's dates and choose with confidence.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the right wedding muhurat from our birth details and wedding city?
The right wedding muhurat is a date that passes the panchang rules, suits both partners' kundalis, and has a pure lagna in the wedding city. Tarini checks all three for every date in your window and recommends the top 3 with exact times.
Why do different pandits and websites give different wedding dates?
Different wedding dates come from a different city, a different month system (amanta or purnimanta), a general list rather than one for your kundalis, or a different classical text. Tarini quotes both texts where they differ.
Can an online muhurat calculator replace my Panditji?
Trust your Panditji for the ceremony and use Tarini for the muhurat. Tarini is the only platform that recommends the muhurat from the shastras and quotes the shloka behind each date. Consult an astrologer on whether to marry in your current dashas.
Can we get a Hindu wedding muhurat for a wedding in the US, UK or abroad?
Yes, Tarini works out the Hindu wedding muhurat for any city in the world, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the Gulf, on that city's own local date and lagna. A London or Dubai wedding gets a London or Dubai muhurat.
Why are there no wedding dates in some months?
Some months are closed to weddings by the shastras, and some have no day that passes the rules.
How quickly can we get our wedding muhurat?
Tarini commits to delivering your wedding muhurat within a few hours, so you can confirm the venue before someone else books it.
Does the engagement need its own muhurat?
Yes, the sagai is a separate ceremony with its own muhurat. Tarini's engagement muhurat covers it, and the complete wedding set includes it.
