Abujh Muhurat 2026 & 2027: What Are They, and Should You Still Take Out a Muhurat?
Published
An abujh muhurat is a day held shubh in itself, so no separate muhurat is needed to begin an auspicious deed on it. The tithi of the day carries the auspiciousness. The lagna, your kundali and Rahu Kaal on that day are not decided by the tithi, so Tarini recommends you still take out a muhurat within the abujh day. Last updated: 21 October 2026
The abujh muhurats are the sade teen (three and a half) muhurats, Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami and half of Bali Pratipada, and in North India Vasant Panchami, Phulera Dooj, Bhadli Navami and Dev Uthani Ekadashi.
What Is an Abujh Muhurat?
Abujh means "not needing to be worked out". An abujh muhurat, also called a swayam siddha muhurat, is a day so shubh in itself that a wedding, griha pravesh, purchase or new venture can begin on it without a panchang check. The best known are the sade teen muhurat, the three and a half days of the year held shubh for every auspicious deed.
Which Days Are Abujh Muhurats?
- The sade teen muhurat (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa): Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami, and Bali Pratipada as the half.
- The abujh days of North India, kept mainly for weddings: Akshaya Tritiya (Akha Teej), Vasant Panchami, Phulera Dooj, Bhadli Navami and Dev Uthani Ekadashi.
- Days some regional lists add: Ram Navami, Janaki Navami, Ganga Dussehra, Vaishakha Purnima, Jhaljhulini Ekadashi, Dhanteras and Akshaya Navami.
What Makes Each of These Days Abujh?
Each abujh day takes its auspiciousness from its tithi: the day a yuga began, the start of the year, or a deity's own day.
Why Is Akshaya Tritiya an Abujh Muhurat?
On Akshaya Tritiya, the Sun and the Moon are both exalted. The Sun is in Mesha, its sign of exaltation, and the Moon is in Vrishabha, the sign of its exaltation. Both luminaries are at their strongest on the same day. Akshaya Tritiya is also a yugadi tithi, the day the Treta Yuga began. Akshaya means "that which does not decay", so what is begun on it does not diminish.
… युगाद्याः सिते गोऽग्नी बाहुलराधयोर्मदनदर्शौ भद्रमाघासिते "… The yugadi tithis: in the bright half, the navami of Kartika and the tritiya of Vaishakha; in the dark half, the trayodashi of Bhadrapada and the amavasya of Magha." (Muhurta Chintamani 1.58)
Why Is Gudi Padwa an Abujh Muhurat?
Gudi Padwa, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, is the first tithi of the new samvatsara. The year, the month of Chaitra and Vasant Navratri all begin on it, and it is the day Brahma began the creation of the world. Pratipada, a Nanda tithi, is the tithi of beginnings. The Sun is in Meena, the last sign of the zodiac, as the new year opens.
Why Is Vijayadashami an Abujh Muhurat?
Vijayadashami, Ashwin Shukla Dashami, is the day of victory. Shri Ram defeated Ravana on it, and Devi's victory over Mahishasura ends Navratri. Dashami is a Purna tithi. Vijayadashami is kept on the day the dashami covers the afternoon, and Shravana nakshatra on that afternoon is especially shubh. Families begin new ventures in the Vijaya muhurta of the afternoon, after Aparajita and Shami puja.
Why Is Bali Pratipada Only Half an Abujh Muhurat?
Bali Pratipada, Kartik Shukla Pratipada, is counted as the half of the sade teen muhurat. It is the day after Diwali: the day King Bali returns, the day of Govardhan puja, and the new year in Gujarat. The Sun is debilitated in Tula on Bali Pratipada every year, because the month of Kartik begins with the Sun in Tula.
Why Is Vasant Panchami an Abujh Muhurat?
Vasant Panchami, Magha Shukla Panchami, is the day of Devi Saraswati and the arrival of vasant. Panchami is a Purna tithi, and the Sun is in Makara in its uttarayana, the half of the year the shastras favour for auspicious beginnings.
Why Is Phulera Dooj an Abujh Muhurat?
Phulera Dooj, Phalguna Shukla Dwitiya, is the day Shri Krishna played with flowers with Radha, opening the Holi season in Braj. Dwitiya is a Bhadra tithi, and the Sun is in Kumbha. It is the last abujh day before Holashtaka.
Why Is Dev Uthani Ekadashi an Abujh Muhurat?
On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, Bhagwan Vishnu wakes from his four months of yoga nidra. Chaturmas ends, weddings resume, and Tulsi vivah is performed. Ekadashi is a Nanda tithi, and the Sun is in Tula or has just entered Vrishchika.
Why Is Bhadli Navami an Abujh Muhurat?
Bhadli Navami, Ashadha Shukla Navami, is the last abujh day before Devshayani Ekadashi, when Bhagwan Vishnu goes to sleep and Chaturmas begins. Navami is a rikta tithi, set aside on any other day, yet Bhadli Navami is held abujh.
Should You Take Out a Muhurat on an Abujh Day?
Absolutely yes! The abujh day is shubh, and it has the power to overcome the obstacles caused by the doshas of the day. But obstacles still come if the deed is begun in an inappropriate lagna, or if a weak chandra bala or tara bala keeps you from the right state of mind. So take out a muhurat within the abujh day, or choose another day that aligns better with the task you wish to undertake.
What Is Still Checked on an Abujh Day?
- The lagna changes about every two hours. Only a strong, shuddha lagna, free of the five baanas (Roga, Agni, Raja, Chora and Mrityu), suits an auspicious beginning.
- The day must suit your kundali. Tara bala and chandra bala are personal, so an abujh day can still be weak for you.
- Rahu Kaal falls on an abujh day too. An auspicious deed is not begun in it.
- The tithi can end early. In New Delhi, the tritiya of Akshaya Tritiya 2027 ends at 09:04 in the morning.
- The occasion's own rules still apply. A vahana is not taken on a Tuesday, and Vijayadashami 2026 fell on a Tuesday. See the vehicle delivery muhurat.
- The timings are for your city. The lagna and Rahu Kaal follow your city's sunrise.
Can We Marry on Akshaya Tritiya Without a Muhurat?
No. Take out a wedding muhurat on Akshaya Tritiya too. A wedding muhurat is checked against both kundalis and the lagna at the pheras. In some years there is no wedding muhurat even on Akshaya Tritiya, because Guru or Shukra is asta. In 2024, both Guru and Shukra were asta on Akshaya Tritiya. Get your wedding muhurat for both kundalis.
