Vehicle Delivery Muhurat: Best Nakshatra, Day and Time for Your New Car or Bike
Published
The muhurat for vehicle delivery is determined according to the nakshatras the shastras prescribe for a vahana, and the buyer's kundali. The nakshatra, tithi, vaara and lagna at the time of the handover are considered when selecting the shubh muhurat. Tarini helps you select a vehicle delivery muhurat for your city and kundali. The nakshatras for vehicle delivery are Hasta, Ashwini, Pushya, Revati, Dhanishtha, Mrigashira, Swati, Shatabhisha and Punarvasu, the nakshatras the shastras prescribe for a vahana.
Why Select a Muhurat for Vehicle Delivery?
In Sanatan Dharma, bringing home a new vahana is an important beginning. The delivery is the moment the vehicle becomes yours, so the shubh muhurat is selected for that moment. The shastras prescribe a muhurat for a vahana so that it serves you well. A car or bike carries the people you love, on the daily commute and on a long drive home. You want it to keep everyone safe, to be reliable, and to stay out of the workshop. The shastras prescribe the muhurat so that the vehicle begins its life with you free of obstacles, with mangal kamna for sukh and kalyan.
Key Facts About the Vehicle Delivery Muhurat
- The muhurat is for taking delivery. The vehicle purchase (vahana kraya) muhurat is the muhurat for the handover. Booking and payment can be done on any day.
- The buyer's kundali matters. A date that is shubh for a vahana must also suit the buyer's janma rashi and kundali.
- The muhurat matters. A shubh date alone does not give the time to take delivery. The muhurat window comes from your city's panchang and local timings.
How Is a Vehicle Delivery Muhurat Selected?
A vehicle delivery muhurat is selected in five steps: the nakshatras the shastras prescribe for a vahana, the days they restrict, what is checked against your kundali, the special yogas of the day, and the lagna at the time of the handover.
1. Which Nakshatra Is Good for Vehicle Purchase?
The vahana nakshatras. For a vahana, the shastras prescribe the Kshipra nakshatras (Hasta, Ashwini and Pushya), Revati, Dhanishtha, Mrigashira, Swati, Shatabhisha and Punarvasu.
क्षिप्रान्त्यवस्विन्दुमरुज्जलेशादित्येष्वरिक्तारदिने प्रशस्तम् । स्याद्वाजिकृत्यं … "In the Kshipra nakshatras, the last [asterism, Revati], Vasu's [Dhanishtha], Indu's [Mrigashira], the wind's [Swati], the water-lord's [Shatabhisha] and Aditi's [Punarvasu], on a day that is not a rikta tithi and not a Tuesday, deeds relating to horses (vehicles) are commended …" (Muhurta Chintamani)
The buying nakshatras. Taking delivery is also an act of buying, and the shastras name Revati, Shatabhisha, Ashwini, Swati, Shravana and Chitra as auspicious for buying:
क्रयर्क्षे विक्रयो नेष्टो विक्रयर्क्षे क्रयोऽपि न । पौष्णाम्बुपाश्विनीवातश्रवश्चित्राः क्रये शुभाः ॥१६॥ "Selling is not done on a buying nakshatra, nor buying on a selling nakshatra. Pushan's [asterism, Revati], the water-lord's [asterism, Shatabhisha], Ashwini, the wind['s asterism, Swati], Shravana and Chitra are auspicious for buying." (Muhurta Chintamani 2.16)
2. Which Days Should Be Avoided for Vehicle Delivery?
Tuesday and the rikta tithis are set aside for a vahana. The verse above commends a vahana only on a day that is not a rikta tithi (chaturthi, navami, chaturdashi) and not a Tuesday.
Vyatipata, Bhadra (Vishti karana) and Vaidhriti are rejected for every auspicious deed, including taking delivery of a vehicle:
जन्मर्क्षमासतिथयो व्यतिपातभद्रा- वैधृत्यमापितृदिनानि तिथिक्षयर्द्धी । न्यूनाधिमासकुलिकप्रहरार्धपाता- विष्कंभवज्रघटिकात्रयमेव वर्ज्यम् ॥ ३४ ॥ "The birth nakshatra, birth month and birth tithi; Vyatipata; Bhadra [karana]; Vaidhriti [yoga]; the days of the death of father and mother; a lost tithi; an added tithi; a lost month; an added month; Kulika; Ardhayama and Pata: these are to be rejected [in every auspicious deed]." (Muhurta Chintamani 1.34)
The shunya tithis and shunya nakshatras of each month are also set aside, because the shastras say an auspicious deed on them works against wealth.
Rahu Kaal is also set aside. The delivery is not taken in Rahu Kaal, which falls at a different time each day and in each city. See how Rahu Kaal is calculated.
3. How Does the Buyer's Kundali Affect the Vehicle Delivery Muhurat?
An auspicious muhurat elected must suit the buyer. Tara bala (the day's nakshatra counted from the buyer's janma nakshatra) and chandra bala (the Moon counted from the buyer's janma rashi) are checked before the muhurat is recommended.
4. Which Yogas Make a Day Shubh for Vehicle Purchase?
The special yogas of the day strengthen the muhurat or set the day aside. Sarvartha Siddhi, Amrita, Siddha and Siddhi yogas favour the delivery. The Dagdha, Visha, Hutashana, Krakacha, Mrityu and Utpata yogas set it aside.
सूर्ये ऽर्कम्लोत्तरपुष्यदासरं चन्द्र श्रुतिब्राह्मशशीज्यमैत्रम् … सर्वार्थसिद्ध्यै कथितानिपूर्वैः "Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga: on Sunday, Hasta, Mula, the three Uttaras, Pushya and Ashwini; on Monday, Shravana, Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya and Anuradha; … According to the ancients, these are declared for Sarvartha Siddhi (success in every undertaking)." (Muhurta Chintamani 1.28)
5. What Is the Best Time to Take Vehicle Delivery? (Lagna and Baana)
The lagna at the time of the handover must be strong and shuddha (pure). Tarini selects the strongest lagna for the muhurat, where the lagna is not afflicted by malefics and the lagnesh is placed well.
Also, muhurats afflicted by any of the five baanas, Roga, Agni, Raja, Chora and Mrityu, are excluded, and so is a lagna occupied by a weak Moon or malefics:
सर्वस्मिन्विधुपापयुक्तनुलवावर्धे … "In every auspicious deed: the ascendant or navamsha occupied by the emaciated Moon and malefics … are rejected." (Muhurta Chintamani 1.31)
Should I Book the Delivery Slot According to the Muhurat?
Absolutely! Take delivery of your vehicle in an auspicious muhurat. Get your muhurat first, then ask the dealer for a delivery slot inside it. If the dealer offers only a few fixed days, choose among them the day and time that carry a shubh muhurat.
What If I Want to Take Vehicle Delivery on Another Day?
If you must take the vehicle delivery on a particular day, take it in a muhurat associated with the nakshatras deemed auspicious for vehicle purchase. Tarini's reports give you the suitable muhurats for every day.
Is There a Shubh Time for Vehicle Registration?
Yes. If you go separately to submit the registration papers, do it on a shubh day. Avoid Vishti karana (Bhadra), Vyatipata, Vaidhriti and Rahu Kaal, and preferably go in an Amrit, Labh or Shubh choghadiya. Check these for your city on today's panchang.
Is Dhanteras or Guru Pushya Enough for Vehicle Delivery?
Depends. Dhanteras and Guru Pushya are shubh days for buying, and dealers are busiest on them. A festival day is a good starting point, but the delivery muhurat must still pass the restricted days, Rahu Kaal, your kundali and the lagna at the handover. Pushya is a Kshipra nakshatra, prescribed for a vahana. Even so, the shastras reject Pushya on a Thursday when it falls with navami (Muhurta Chintamani 1.22). Read more on Pushya nakshatra and the Guru Pushya dates.
Abujh muhurats are shubh, but you should still take out a muhurat. Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami and Gudi Padwa are abujh (self-auspicious) days. Even on an abujh day:
- The lagna changes about every two hours. Only a strong, shuddha lagna, free of the baanas, suits the handover. For example, delivery is not taken in the Chora baana (risk of theft), the Raja baana (trouble with the authorities), the Agni baana (risk of fire) or the Mrityu baana (difficulties as grave as death).
- The day must suit the buyer's kundali. Tara bala and chandra bala are personal, so an abujh day can still be relatively weak for you.
- Rahu Kaal falls on an abujh day too. The delivery is not taken in it.
- The timings are for your city. The lagna and Rahu Kaal follow your city's sunrise.
