What Is Ṛta? The Rigveda's Cosmic Order and Why Timing Matters

Ṛta (ऋत) is the Rigveda's word for cosmic order: the order by which rivers reach the sea, dawn follows night and the seasons turn. That order unfolds in time, so the moment you begin something matters. Every muhurat grows from this root.
Ṛta is the way the world goes when nothing has gone wrong: a promise kept, a fire lit at the hour it was meant to be lit.

What is ṛta in the Rigveda?
Ṛta is the order that runs nature, ritual and truth in the Rigveda. The hymns name it several hundred times, and almost always as something living, not an abstraction.
Ṛta is a path you walk. The hymns call it ṛtasya panthāḥ, the path of ṛta:
- Rivers flow by ṛta
- The Sun rises by ṛta
- Dawn returns by ṛta
- The sacred fire is lit at its hour by ṛta
Ṛta and satya: what is the difference?
Satya is truth in speech; ṛta is truth in the structure of the world. The Rigveda names them together, born of the same heat:
ऋतं च सत्यं चाभीद्धात् तपसोऽध्यजायत "Ṛta and satya were born of blazing tapas." (Rigveda 10.190.1, paraphrase)
The result? Honest speech and the order of nature are one truth, seen from two sides. A person who speaks satya walks in step with ṛta.
Who protects ṛta in the Rigveda?
Varuṇa, with the Ādityas, is the keeper of ṛta in the Rigveda. Varuṇa sees everything that moves:
वेदा यो वीनां पदमन्तरिक्षेण पतताम् । वेद नावः समुद्रियः ॥ "He knows the path of the birds that fly through the sky; he knows the ships upon the sea." (Rigveda 1.25.7, paraphrase)
What is anṛta?
Anṛta is the opposite of ṛta: falsehood and disorder, the world made to run against its grain. To act wrongly is to row against a current that was already flowing.
What is the difference between ṛta and dharma?
Ṛta is the order of the cosmos; dharma is that same order as your duty, in your role and stage of life. In the Upaniṣads and the later texts on dharma, dharma becomes the central word.
- Ṛta: order as a fact of the cosmos, there before us
- Dharma: order as duty, for this person, in this role, at this stage of life
Dharma is ṛta brought indoors and given a household. The sixteen sanskaras are where that household meets time.
Why does ṛta make the moment matter?
Ṛta makes the moment matter because the order of the world arrives in time, one season after another. Ṛta shares its root, √ṛ ("to move, to go"), with ṛtu, the word for season. A season is ṛta made visible as time.
So no moment is neutral:
- The order is real, and it is already running.
- It shows itself in time as well as in space.
- So a well-chosen moment is alignment with that order.
A muhurat is the moment that runs with the grain of the world. Jyotish, the eye of the Veda, is the knowledge that reads where that grain runs.
