What is griha pravesh?

Griha pravesh (गृह प्रवेश, "entering the home") is the Hindu housewarming ceremony: the family's first entry into a home, with a puja, at a muhurat chosen for that home. You will also see it spelt grih pravesh or gruhapravesham.

The family enters with a kalash and performs the Ganesh and Vastu puja and a havan. The muhurat decides the moment the household's life in the home begins.

(Muhurta Chintamani 13.1)

Which days are not good for griha pravesh?

Tuesdays and Sundays are not good for griha pravesh, and neither are the rikta tithis (the 4th, 9th and 14th), Amavasya, the month of Chaitra, Kharmas, Adhik maas, Pitru Paksha, Holashtaka in north India, or any stretch when Venus or Jupiter is combust. A day in any of these is set aside. Within a good day, the four moving lagnas (Mesha, Karka, Tula, Makara) are set aside too.

Your door's direction changes the tithi

The tithi for your griha pravesh depends on which way your main door faces. The classical texts match each direction to its tithis:

• East-facing home: purna tithis (5th, 10th, 15th)
• South-facing home: nanda tithis (1st, 6th, 11th)
• West-facing home: bhadra tithis (2nd, 7th, 12th)
• North-facing home: jaya tithis (3rd, 8th, 13th)

So the direction of your main door is part of choosing your date.

If the entry has already happened on an ashubh day, the shastras prescribe shanti: a Vastu Shanti puja or a shanti havan at a shubh muhurat, with the mantras for the home.

• Ask your Panditji or an astrologer to read the owners' kundalis against the day of entry and name the corrective rite
• Perform Vastu Shanti or a shanti havan, honouring Vastu Purusha and clearing the doshas of the entry
• Recite the mantras for the home: the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, the Ganapati Atharvashirsha and the Vastu Sukta
