How to do vidyarambha at home, step by step
You can do vidyarambha at home in five steps, with a grandparent, a teacher or the child's maternal uncle as guru.
- Choose the day and the hour: Vijayadashami or Vasant Panchami, in the morning.
- Set the altar: Saraswati and Ganesha, a plate of raw rice, honey and a gold ring.
- Offer the puja to Ganesha, Saraswati and the family deity.
- Write the first letter: the guru seats the child on the lap and guides the right index finger to write Om or "Hari Sri" in the rice.
- Honour the guru with dakshina, and keep the child's slate or first book at the altar.
In Kerala the guru also writes on the child's tongue with a gold ring dipped in honey, so the first letters are tasted as sweetness.
