About the Festival

Vasant Panchami is a much-loved celebration across India that honours Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and the arts, and welcomes the arrival of spring. It takes place on the Panchami (fifth day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Magha.

The Katha (Story of the Birth of Goddess Saraswati)

Once upon a time, after Lord Brahma created the universe, he saw that the world was silent and without life or joy. There were no words, no music and no meaning in the living beings he had made, and the earth seemed dull and still.

Troubled by this, Lord Brahma took water from his Kamandal (water pot) and sprinkled it on the earth, with the prayer for a divine energy to bring speech and knowledge to the world. As the water fell, a radiant goddess appeared, dressed in white and holding a Veena in her hands, along with a book and a Mala.

She began to play the Veena, and the world came alive with sound. The rivers murmured, the birds sang, and living beings gained the power of speech and wisdom. Lord Brahma blessed her with the words: "You will be known as Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, speech, music and wisdom. Whoever worships you with devotion on this day will be blessed with learning."

Since that day, Vasant Panchami is celebrated as the birthday of Goddess Saraswati, and devotees worship her to receive knowledge, skill and wisdom.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully to perform the ritual correctly:

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean, yellow clothes (or white, as many families in Bengal and Odisha do).
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Divine Mother Saraswati, today I worship you with pure devotion. Bless me and my family with knowledge, wisdom and success."
  3. Observe the fast until the puja is done (some families, especially in Bengal and Odisha, keep a fast until the Pushpanjali).

Step 2: Preparing the Puja Altar

  1. Clean the northeastern corner (Ishan Kone) of your home, or the place of puja.
  2. Place the idol or picture of Goddess Saraswati on a wooden stool (Chowki) covered with a clean white or yellow cloth.
  3. Place books, pens, notebooks and musical instruments before the Goddess, and set a Kalash filled with clean water nearby (in Bengal and Odisha, children also place their books at her feet and do not read on the day).

Step 3: Performing the Puja Rituals

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Ghee Diya and incense in front of Goddess Saraswati.
  2. Applying Tilak: Apply Roli, Kumkum, Chandan, Haldi and Akshat to the image.
  3. Offering Flowers & Threads: Offer yellow flowers and tie a piece of Kalava (sacred thread) on the Kalash.
  4. Offering Naivedya: Place the yellow sweets, ber and fruits before the Goddess.

Step 4: Reciting the Saraswati Vandana

  1. Hold a few grains of rice and flower petals in your right hand.
  2. Sit respectfully in front of the altar and recite the Saraswati Vandana (hymn in praise of the Goddess), starting with "Ya Kundendu Tusharahara Dhavala...", or listen to it with deep focus.
  3. After the recitation, sprinkle the held grains and petals at the feet of the Goddess.

Step 5: Aarti and Pushpanjali

  1. Perform the Saraswati Aarti using the lit Ghee lamp while singing devotional hymns.
  2. Offer Pushpanjali (an offering of flowers with folded hands) to the Goddess, praying for knowledge and wisdom.
  3. In many homes, young children are made to write their first letters (Vidyarambh or Akshar Abhyasam) on this day, as it is considered very auspicious.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Sharing Prasad

  1. Touch the feet of the elders and teachers to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh).
  2. Distribute the sweet prasad among your family members, friends and children.
  3. Break your fast with the prasad and a simple sattvic meal.
