A baby's first year carries several rites in quick succession, each on its own reckoning and each at a moment when the family is busy with a newborn. Jatakarma belongs to the first day or two, namkaran to the eleventh or twelfth day or the first months, nishkramana to about the fourth month, and annaprashana to the fifth to seventh. Deciding them once and redeeming each as it arrives spares the family from starting a fresh enquiry every few months at exactly the times they have least attention to spare.
