Shilpa Vidya Arambha, the beginning of a craft or trade, is the muhurat for the first day of work that will feed you: taking up a skill, apprenticing to a trade, or setting your hand to a livelihood for the first time. A shubh muhurat is chosen for the hour the tools are first picked up. The windows are dated and timed for your city, ranked, and read against your own birth chart, with the days worth avoiding marked. Families keep a शिल्प विद्या आरंभ मुहूर्त apart from an ordinary joining date because it fixes the hour the tools are first picked up, and that hour is the one an old workshop still remembers years later as the day the work began.

Shilpa Vidya Arambha is held when someone formally begins a craft: a tailor's or goldsmith's apprenticeship, a first day at a workshop or studio, the start of training in a family trade, or the day a self-taught skill is first practised as paid work. A puja to Vishwakarma or Saraswati is common, the tools are cleaned and honoured, and the first piece of work is begun inside the chosen window. It is usually arranged in the forenoon, on a day the teacher or master is also free.
