About the Festival

Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu year, celebrated across India as a day of prosperity, charity, and new beginnings, and known as Akha Teej in Gujarat and Rajasthan. It takes place on the Tritiya (third day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha.

The Katha (Story of Dharmadas)

Long ago, there lived a poor but righteous merchant named Dharmadas. He was deeply devoted to the gods, honest in his dealings, and always ready to help others, though he had little wealth of his own.

One day he heard that giving charity on Akshaya Tritiya brings merit that never ends. He wished to give, but his family was poor, and his wife and relatives told him that he could not afford it. Dharmadas did not lose heart.

He rose early on Akshaya Tritiya, bathed in the Ganga, and worshipped Lord Vishnu. Then, with full faith, he gave away what he had to the needy: water pots, barley, wheat, sattu, and food. His family worried that he was ruining himself, but he remained firm in his devotion and held back nothing out of fear.

Pleased with his selfless giving, the Lord blessed him. In his next birth, Dharmadas was born as a mighty and generous king, who enjoyed great wealth, power, and fame. Since that day, devotees have given charity and worshipped Lord Vishnu on Akshaya Tritiya, trusting that every good deed done on this day grows without end.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully to perform the ritual correctly:

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe (preferably in a holy river, or with a few drops of Ganga Jal in your bath water), and wear clean, light-coloured clothes.
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi, today I worship you on Akshaya Tritiya. Bless me and my family with lasting prosperity, good health, and the strength to do good deeds."
  3. Many devotees keep a light fast or eat only sattvic food until the puja is done.

Step 2: Preparing the Puja Altar

  1. Clean the northeastern corner (Ishan Kone) or the puja room of your home.
  2. Place the image of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on a Chowki covered with a clean yellow or red cloth.
  3. Set the Kalash filled with water near the idols, topped with mango leaves and a coconut.

Step 3: Performing the Puja

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Ghee Diya and incense before the deities.
  2. Applying Tilak: Apply Chandan, Roli, Kumkum, and Akshat to the images.
  3. Offering Flowers & Tulsi: Offer fresh flowers and Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu.
  4. Offering Naivedya: Place barley or Sattu, jaggery, fruits, and sweets before the deities.

Step 4: Reciting the Katha and Japa

  1. Hold a few grains of rice and flower petals in your right hand.
  2. Recite or listen to the Akshaya Tritiya Katha with deep focus and devotion.
  3. Chant the name of Lord Vishnu, or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, as you are able, then offer the grains and petals at the deities' feet.

Step 5: Aarti and Daan (Charity)

  1. Perform the Aarti of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi using the lit Ghee lamp.
  2. Give charity (Daan) to the needy and to Brahmins, such as water pots, barley, grains, clothes, or food. Giving water and cooling items in the heat is especially cherished.
  3. In Odisha, families also begin the sowing of paddy and offer sandalwood paste to the Lord, in keeping with Chandan Yatra.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Closing the Day

  1. Touch the feet of the elders in your family to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh).
  2. Distribute the prasad among family members and neighbours.
  3. Begin new and auspicious ventures, or buy gold and other lasting items if you wish, and close the day with a simple sattvic meal.
