About the Festival

Phulera Dooj is a joyful North Indian festival, especially in Braj, in which Radha and Krishna are worshipped with fresh flowers as the colours of Holi draw near. It takes place on the Dwitiya (second day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Phalguna.

The Katha (Story of Radha and Krishna in Braj)

Once upon a time, Lord Krishna, busy with his duties away from Braj, did not visit Vrindavan for many days. Radha missed him deeply, and her sadness spread over the whole forest. The flowers stopped blooming and the groves of Vrindavan lost their colour.

The gopis saw Radha's sorrow and sent word to Krishna of her condition. Hearing it, Krishna returned to Braj to meet her. The gopis consoled Radha and advised: "Do not grieve. Krishna has come, and the forest will bloom again. Welcome him with joy and with flowers."

The moment Krishna arrived, the flowers of Vrindavan bloomed again. Radha and Krishna, together with the gopis, played with flowers, showering each other with petals in delight. This was the first play of the festival of colours.

Since that day, Phulera Dooj has been celebrated with flowers, and devotees offer petals to Radha and Krishna to seek their blessings.
