Joining a New Job

My offer letter said start on the 1st or the 8th, my choice, and that is the first time an employer has handed me a decision I could actually use. This one asked where the office was and answered in my clock. So I took the 8th without spending a midnight doing subtraction to get there.

I have switched companies four times and never once picked the joining date. This time the family was moving with me and I did not want the first day to be a random Monday.

My mother in Kochi wanted the joining day looked at and her astrologer takes a week to write back. I had windows the same evening, computed for Singapore, which is where the office actually is. She rang him anyway and read him the reasoning, and he told her there was nothing to add.

My grandson got a job in Noida and rang on a Tuesday to tell me, and he was going to join on the 6th because that is what the letter said. Nobody in that office had asked him whether he had a choice of date. He did have one. I found that out for him and he used it.
