Upanayana, known in most homes as the janeu, yagnopavit or munji, is the ceremony in which a boy is invested with the sacred thread and given the Gayatri mantra, marking the start of his formal study. The Upanayana is a samskara performed for a boy, traditionally between the ages of about seven and sixteen depending on the family's tradition, in which the head is shaved, a bath and homa are performed, the sacred thread is placed over the left shoulder, and the Gayatri mantra is taught by the father or the acharya. Families hold it in the auspicious months of the first half of the year, often combining it with a wedding or a thread ceremony for cousins, and it usually runs from before dawn to the afternoon.
