About the panchang for Kochi
Because a tithi is counted from the local sunrise, panchang timings differ from city to city, even within India. This page uses Kochi's own sunrise, so the timings shown are the right ones for Kochi.
These timings are calculated for central Kochi (9.93° N, 76.27° E). They shift by about a minute for every 27 km east or west, so if you live further out, search for your own town above.

Frequently asked questions
What should not be done in Rahu Kaal? Can puja be done in it?
Rahu Kaal is about an hour and a half every day that is traditionally kept free of new beginnings: setting out on a journey, a purchase, a new job or business, a ceremony. Work already under way and daily puja carry on as usual.
What is Brahma Muhurta?
Brahma Muhurta is a stretch of about 48 minutes in the last part of the night, before sunrise, traditionally the best time for meditation, prayer and study.
Which choghadiya is best: Amrit, Shubh or Labh?
All three are good for starting things. Amrit is held good for any work, Shubh suits ceremonies and puja, and Labh suits business, buying and study. Char suits travel; Rog, Kaal and Udveg are best avoided.
How long is a tithi, and when does it change?
A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move 12° further from the Sun, so it can begin and end at any hour. A day is named by the tithi at sunrise, and the panchang day runs from one sunrise to the next.
What are the five parts of a panchang?
Tithi (the lunar day), nakshatra (the star the Moon is in), yoga (a measure of the Sun's and Moon's positions together), karana (half a tithi) and vaara (the weekday).
What is the difference between Amanta and Purnimanta months?
Amanta months end at the new moon and are followed mostly in South and West India; Purnimanta months end at the full moon and are followed mostly in North India. In the dark half of the month (Krishna paksha) the Purnimanta name runs one month ahead.
Why is the tithi different in the USA, the UK or another city?
A tithi changes at the same moment everywhere, but that moment is a different clock time in each place, and each place has its own sunrise. So a tithi can begin on a different date abroad, and a fast or festival can fall a day apart from India.
