Puja Vidhi

Who Should Do This Vrat?

  • Devotees of Goga Ji: Devotees, especially in Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, worship Goga Ji (also known as Jahar Veer) with a fast and offerings, seeking his protection and blessings.
  • Families Seeking Protection from Snakes: Families pray to Goga Ji for protection from snakebite and from fears and harm to their children, cattle, and homes (Sarp Bhay Nivaran).

When Should This Be Performed?

  • Morning Preparation: Bathe early in the morning, during Brahma Muhurta (the pre-dawn period before sunrise), and begin the fast.
  • Main Puja: Performed in the morning, after the bath, before midday. Check the puja muhurat for your city on this page.
  • Evening Worship: Devotees gather in the evening, after sunset, to sing songs in praise of Goga Ji. (Timing may differ between families and villages.)

About the Festival

Goga Navami is a deeply revered observance in Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab dedicated to Goga Ji, the warrior-saint worshipped as the lord of snakes. It takes place on the Navami (ninth day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

The Vrat Katha (Story of Goga Ji)

Long ago in Rajasthan, there was a queen named Bachal, who longed for a child. She sought the blessings of the great yogi Guru Gorakhnath, who gave her a sacred blessing. By his grace, a son was born, who came to be known as Goga Ji, or Jahar Veer.

Goga Ji grew up to be a brave and righteous king, loved by his people. He was devoted to protecting cows, the weak, and the helpless, and it was said that he held power over snakes. When his own kinsmen turned against him and raised their swords, he faced them with courage, upholding his duty and his word. Guru Gorakhnath had advised him: "Stay true to dharma, protect those who seek your shelter, and never abandon your word."

Goga Ji lived by these words until the end of his life, when he entered the earth together with his horse. His place of samadhi (Goga Medi) became a holy site. Devotees believe that he protects those who worship him from snakes and from every danger. Since that day, devotees have observed Goga Navami with offerings and songs in his praise.

Samagri List (Items Needed)

Gather these items before starting the morning puja:

  • Lamps & Lights: A clay Diya with Ghee or oil and cotton wick, and incense sticks
  • Sacred Water Container: A small vessel filled with fresh water and raw milk
  • Food Offerings (Naivedya): Kheer, Churma, Halwa, Puri, and sweet Gulgule
  • Devotional Accessories: Flowers, a sacred thread (Kalava), and a flag (Nishan) in blue or red

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully to perform the ritual correctly:

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean, auspicious clothes.
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Goga Ji, today I observe this vrat and worship you with devotion. Protect my family, my children, and my home from every harm."
  3. Observe the fast throughout the day, eating only a simple, sattvic meal after the puja (families differ in how strictly the fast is kept).

Step 2: Preparing the Puja Place

  1. Clean the eastern side of your home or the place of worship.
  2. Place the picture or clay figure of Goga Ji on a wooden stool (Chowki) covered with a clean cloth.
  3. Place the Chhadi or Nishan near the figure, and keep a vessel of water and raw milk ready.

Step 3: Performing the Worship

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Diya and place it in front of Goga Ji.
  2. Applying Tilak: Apply Roli, Kumkum, and Akshat to the image of Goga Ji.
  3. Offering Flowers & Threads: Offer fresh flowers and tie a piece of Kalava (sacred thread) on the Chhadi or the figure.
  4. Offering Naivedya: Offer Kheer, Churma, Halwa, Puri, and Gulgule before the deity.

Step 4: Reciting the Story

  1. Hold a few grains of rice and a few flower petals in your right hand.
  2. Sit respectfully in front of the altar and listen to or recite the story of Goga Ji with devotion.
  3. After the story, offer the grains and petals at the feet of Goga Ji.

Step 5: Aarti and Offering Milk

  1. Perform the Goga Ji Aarti using the lit lamp while singing devotional hymns and songs in his praise.
  2. Pour a little raw milk, as an offering, at a snake burrow or an anthill if one is nearby, or offer it before the figure of Goga Ji (as your family tradition prescribes).
  3. Pray for the safety of your family, your children, and your cattle.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Sharing Prasad

  1. Touch the feet of the elders in your family to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh).
  2. Distribute the Naivedya as prasad among family members and neighbours.
  3. Break your fast by partaking in the prasad and a simple sattvic meal.
