About the Festival

Hariyali Teej is a much-loved North Indian festival, celebrated in the green season of the monsoon, in which women worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. It takes place on the Tritiya (third day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravana.

The Vrat Katha (Story of Shiva and Parvati)

Once upon a time, Goddess Sati gave up her life, and was born again as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan. From childhood, she wished to have Lord Shiva as her husband, and she began a severe penance in the forests of the Himalayas, living on leaves and air alone.

Her father, unaware of her wish, promised her hand to Lord Vishnu, on the advice of the sage Narada. Parvati was heartbroken, and she shared her sorrow with her friends. They led her into a deep forest, where she continued her tapasya in a cave, building a Shivalinga of sand and worshipping it day and night.

Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and said: "Your penance has pleased me. I accept you as my wife." Himavan, hearing the news, agreed gladly and the two were joined in marriage. It is believed that this union was blessed on Shravana Shukla Tritiya.

Pleased by the devotion of women who fast on this day, the Divine Mother grants them long married life and the same love and togetherness that Shiva and Parvati share. Since that day, women observe Hariyali Teej wearing green, singing songs, and swinging in the rains in celebration.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully to perform the ritual correctly:

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean, auspicious clothes (preferably green, red, or yellow).
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Divine Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva, today I observe this fast for the long life and wellbeing of my husband and family. Grant me the strength to fulfil this vow with pure devotion."
  3. Observe the fast through the day. Many women keep a nirjala fast (without water), while others take only fruits and water (families differ).

Step 2: Preparing the Puja Altar

  1. Clean the northeastern corner (Ishan Kone) or the eastern wall of your room.
  2. Place the idols of Shiva, Parvati, and Ganesha on a wooden stool (Chowki) covered with a clean cloth.
  3. Place a Kalash filled with water on a small pile of rice grains near the idols, and decorate it with Kalava.

Step 3: Performing the Rituals

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Ghee Diya and incense before Shiva and Parvati.
  2. Applying Tilak: Apply Roli, Kumkum, Akshat, and Sandalwood paste to the idols and the Kalash.
  3. Offering Flowers & Leaves: Offer fresh flowers and Belpatra to Lord Shiva, and offer the Suhag items to Goddess Parvati.
  4. Offering Naivedya: Place Ghewar, Malpua, Kheer, and fruits before the deities.

Step 4: Reciting the Vrat Katha

  1. Hold a few grains of rice and a few flower petals in your right hand.
  2. Sit respectfully in front of the altar and recite or listen to the Hariyali Teej Vrat Katha with deep focus and devotion.
  3. After completing the story, offer the grains at the deities' feet and at the base of the Kalash.

Step 5: Aarti and Teej Celebrations

  1. Perform the Shiva-Parvati Aarti using the lit Ghee lamp while singing devotional hymns.
  2. Women wear green and decorate their hands with Mehendi, and gather to sing Teej songs.
  3. Enjoy the swings (Jhoola) tied to trees and verandas, as is the custom of this day.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Breaking the Fast

  1. Touch the feet of the elders in your family, especially your mother-in-law, to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh). Many daughters-in-law offer her a gift of clothes and sweets.
  2. Distribute the sweet prasad among your family members.
  3. Break your fast by partaking in the prasad and a simple sattvic meal.
