About the Festival

Kokila Vrat is a revered observance in which women worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and the Kokila (cuckoo) for a blessed married life. It takes place on the Purnima (full moon day) of the month of Ashadha.

The Vrat Katha (Story of Sati as the Kokila)

Long ago, Prajapati Daksha, a powerful king and the father of Sati, held a grand yagna. Sati had married Lord Shiva against her father's wishes, and Daksha did not invite them to the ceremony. Sati, however, went to her father's home uninvited, hoping to be welcomed as a daughter.

At the yagna, Daksha insulted Lord Shiva openly before all the guests. Unable to bear the humiliation of her husband, Sati gave up her life in the sacrificial fire. When Lord Shiva learned of this, his grief and anger shook the world. He was also displeased that Sati had gone against his word, and he cursed her to wander the earth for ten thousand years in the form of a Kokila, a cuckoo bird.

Sati lived in the forest as a cuckoo, and in her penance she kept worshipping Lord Shiva with deep love and patience. In this form she is remembered as the Kokila, and the vow kept in her name is called the Kokila Vrat.

When her time of penance was over, she was born again as Parvati, the daughter of Himalaya, and through her devoted tapasya she won Lord Shiva as her husband once more. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva accepted her again. Since that day, women have observed the Kokila Vrat to seek a happy and lasting married life.
