Puja Vidhi

Who Celebrates This Festival?

  • Devotees of Shri Krishna and Radha: Men and women worship the divine couple on this day and seek their blessings for joy and love in their lives.
  • Families and Communities: Everyone joins in the celebration with colours, praying for happiness, harmony, and the removal of negativity from their homes (Shuddhi).

  • Evening Aarti: An aarti in the evening, after sunset, to close the day with prayers.

About the Festival

Rang Panchami is a joyful observance of colours, celebrated across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, and is believed to be the day on which the gods themselves play with colour. It takes place on the Panchami (fifth day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Chaitra.

The Katha (Story of Radha and Krishna's Colours)

In the village of Gokul, little Krishna was a dark-complexioned child, while his beloved friend Radha of Barsana was fair and radiant. Krishna often wondered why he was so dark and Radha so fair, and it troubled the young boy.

He shared his worry with his mother, Yashoda, who smiled lovingly and said: "My dear child, if you want to be like her, go and apply whatever colour you wish on Radha's face. Then you will both be the same colour." Krishna, delighted by the idea, went to Radha with his friends, the gopas, and playfully coloured her face and the faces of the gopis.

Radha and the gopis laughed and returned the colours in a joyful play, and the whole of Braj was filled with laughter, love, and colour. Seeing this play of devotion and joy, even the gods are said to have descended to take part in it, which is why Rang Panchami is also called the festival of the Devas. Since that day, devotees have played with colours on this day, seeking the love of Radha and Krishna, and believing that colours cleanse the air of negativity.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early, bathe, and wear clean, auspicious clothes (preferably white, yellow, or pink).
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Shri Radha Krishna, today I celebrate Rang Panchami in your honour. Fill my life with joy, love, and devotion, and remove all negativity from my home."
  3. This is not a day of strict fasting; take light, sattvic food in the morning before the puja.

Step 2: Preparing the Puja Altar

  1. Clean the puja place and spread a clean yellow or red cloth over a wooden stool (Chowki).
  2. Place the idol or picture of Radha and Krishna on the Chowki.
  3. Keep the Gulal, flowers, and Naivedya ready near the altar.

Step 3: Performing the Morning Rituals

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Ghee Diya and incense in front of the deity.
  2. Applying Tilak: Apply Chandan, Roli, and Akshat to the deity.
  3. Offering Colours: Offer a pinch of Gulal at the feet of the deity and gently apply some to the idols' cheeks.
  4. Offering Naivedya: Offer flowers, Tulsi leaves, and sweets, placing the Naivedya before the deity.

Step 4: Reciting the Katha

  1. Hold a few grains of rice and a few flower petals in your right hand.
  2. Sit respectfully in front of the altar and recite or listen to the story of Radha and Krishna's play of colours with deep focus and devotion.
  3. After completing the story, offer the grains and petals at the feet of the deity.

Step 5: Aarti and Playing with Colours

  1. Perform the Radha Krishna Aarti using the lit Ghee lamp while singing devotional hymns.
  2. Apply a tilak of Gulal on the foreheads of the family members and play with the colours, using only dry, natural, and herbal colours.
  3. Join in singing and dancing with family and neighbours.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Sharing Prasad

  1. Touch the feet of the elders in your family to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh).
  2. Distribute the sweets and Thandai as prasad among family members, neighbours, and children.
