About the Festival

Jaya Parvati Vrat is a much-loved observance, kept especially in Gujarat, in which women and girls worship Goddess Parvati for a happy married life. It takes place on the Trayodashi (thirteenth day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha.

The Vrat Katha (Story of Vaman and Satya)

Once upon a time, in the town of Kaundinya, there lived a pious Brahmin named Vaman and his wife Satya. Their home lacked nothing, yet they were deeply sad because they had no children.

One day, the couple prayed with great devotion to Lord Shiva. A divine voice told them that a Shiva Linga lay hidden in the nearby forest and that no one was worshipping it. Vaman and Satya went to the forest, found the Linga, and began to worship it faithfully with flowers and prayers. Five years passed in this way. One day, while Vaman was picking flowers for the puja, a snake bit him and he fell senseless in the forest.

Satya was heartbroken and prayed with all her heart for her husband's life. Moved by her sincere devotion, Lord Shiva restored Vaman to life, and Goddess Parvati advised the couple: "Observe the Jaya Parvati Vrat with faith. By this fast, all your wishes will be fulfilled."

The couple followed her words with complete devotion. Pleased with their faith, Shiva and Parvati blessed them, and they were granted a son. Since that day, women and girls have observed the Jaya Parvati Vrat to seek the blessings of Goddess Parvati for a happy and lasting married life.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully to perform the ritual correctly:

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean, auspicious clothes (preferably red, yellow, or green; avoid wearing black).
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Divine Mother Parvati, today I begin this Jaya Parvati Vrat with a pure heart. Bless me with a happy married life and the wellbeing of my family."
  3. Observe the fast as your family tradition prescribes, avoiding salt and wheat in your meals through the five days.

Step 2: Preparing the Puja Altar

  1. Clean the puja space and place a wooden stool (Chowki) covered with a clean red cloth.
  2. Place the image or idol of Shiva and Parvati on the Chowki, with the pot of Jawara beside it.
  3. Place a Kalash or small pot filled with clean water near the image.

Step 3: Performing the Rituals

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Ghee Diya and place it before Goddess Parvati.
  2. Applying Tilak: Apply Roli, Kumkum, and Akshat to the image and to the Jawara.
  3. Offering Flowers & Threads: Offer fresh flowers and the Nagla, and tie a piece of Kalava on the pot.
  4. Offering Naivedya: Place fruits and sweets before the deity.

Step 4: Reciting the Vrat Katha

  1. Hold a few grains of rice and a few flower petals in your right hand.
  2. Sit respectfully in front of the altar and recite or listen to the Jaya Parvati Vrat Katha with deep focus and devotion.
  3. After completing the story, offer the held grains and petals at the feet of the Goddess.

Step 5: Aarti and Prayers

  1. Perform the Parvati Aarti using the lit Ghee lamp while singing devotional hymns.
  2. Water the Jawara gently each day and pray for a happy married life.
  3. On the last day, many families stay awake through the night singing devotional songs (Jagran), and the Jawara is immersed in a river or pond the next day.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Breaking the Fast

  1. Touch the feet of the elders in your family to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh).
  2. Distribute the prasad among your family members.
