  • Breaking the Fast: After the evening puja and prasad, or the next morning.

About the Festival

Kalabhairav Jayanti is a deeply revered observance celebrated across India, marking the appearance of Kalabhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. It takes place on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Margashirsha.

The Vrat Katha (Story of Kalabhairav's Appearance)

Once upon a time, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu argued over who among them was supreme. To settle the matter, the gods approached Lord Shiva. Brahma, who had five heads at the time, spoke with pride and insulted Shiva with his fifth head.

Shiva became angry and from his wrath the fierce Kalabhairav appeared. His fiery form frightened all who beheld him. Shiva told him to rid Brahma of his pride, and with a stroke of his nail Kalabhairav cut off Brahma's fifth head.

Because the head stuck to his hand, Kalabhairav was burdened with the sin of Brahmahatya. He wandered through the world for a long time, seeking release, until he reached the holy city of Kashi, where the skull finally fell from his hand. Kalabhairav was freed from his burden, and Shiva ordained that he would stay in Kashi as its protector. Since that day, devotees have worshipped Kalabhairav on this day for protection from fear and wrongdoing.
