About the Festival

Vat Savitri Vrat is a deeply revered observance across India in which married women worship the Banyan tree and pray for the long life of their husbands. It takes place on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha (in some regions, it is kept on the Purnima, as Vat Purnima).

The Vrat Katha (Story of Savitri and Satyavan)

Once upon a time, there lived a princess named Savitri, the daughter of King Ashwapati. She chose to marry Satyavan, a prince living in the forest with his blind parents, even though Sage Narada told her that Satyavan was destined to live only one more year.

Savitri served her husband and in-laws with deep devotion. On the day Satyavan was fated to die, she went with him to the forest. As he was cutting wood, he felt dizzy and fell with his head in her lap under a Banyan tree. Yamraj, the god of death, arrived to take his soul away.

Savitri followed Yamraj with unwavering devotion. Impressed by her courage and wisdom, he offered her boons, but not her husband's life. She asked for her in-laws' sight and kingdom, and then for a hundred sons. Yamraj granted them, and Savitri said: "How can I have sons without my husband? Grant me his life, so that your word comes true."

Moved by her truth and devotion, Yamraj returned Satyavan's life. Since that day, married women have worshipped the Banyan tree and observed the Vat Savitri Vrat for the long life of their husbands.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these step-by-step instructions carefully to perform the ritual correctly:

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean, auspicious clothes (preferably red, yellow, or green, with Suhag adornments).
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Divine Mother Savitri, today I observe this fast for the long life, health and wellbeing of my husband. Grant me the strength to fulfil this vow with pure devotion."
  3. Observe the fast throughout the day, taking only water or fruits if needed, as your family tradition follows.

Step 2: Preparing the Puja (Morning)

  1. Go to a Banyan tree with the puja plate, or, if you cannot go to one, draw a Banyan tree on the wall or bring a cut branch of it to your home.
  2. Clean the base of the tree and place the images of Savitri and Satyavan near it.
  3. Place a Lota of water, flowers, fruits and Naivedya in the plate near the tree.

Step 3: Performing the Rituals

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Ghee Diya and incense at the foot of the Banyan tree.
  2. Applying Tilak: Apply Roli, Kumkum, Haldi and Akshat to the tree and the images.
  3. Offering Water & Flowers: Pour water at the roots of the tree and offer fresh flowers.
  4. Offering Naivedya: Place the soaked chana, fruits and sweets before the tree and Savitri-Satyavan.

Step 4: Parikrama and Reciting the Vrat Katha

  1. Tie the raw cotton thread or Kalava around the trunk of the Banyan tree while walking around it in Parikrama, seven times (some families walk around it three, five or one hundred and eight times).
  2. Hold a few grains of rice and flower petals in your right hand.
  3. Sit respectfully near the tree and recite or listen to the Vat Savitri Vrat Katha, then sprinkle the grains and petals at the foot of the tree.

Step 5: Aarti and Prayers

  1. Perform the Aarti of the Banyan tree and Savitri using the lit Ghee lamp while singing devotional hymns.
  2. Fan the tree gently with the hand fan, as a gesture of service.
  3. Apply Sindoor to your hair parting, and pray for the long life and happiness of your husband.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Breaking the Fast

  1. Touch the feet of the elders in your family, and your mother-in-law, to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh).
  2. Offer the soaked chana and fruits as prasad, and distribute it among your family members.
  3. Break your fast by partaking in the prasad and a simple sattvic meal.
