About the Festival
Phalaharini Kali Puja is a much-loved Bengali festival in which Goddess Kali is worshipped in the depth of the night. It takes place on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the month of Jyeshtha.
The Katha (Story of Phalaharini Kali Puja at Dakshineswar)
Long ago, in the temple garden of Dakshineswar near Kolkata, lived the great saint Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, a devoted worshipper of Maa Kali. His wife, Sarada Devi, had come to stay with him, and he saw in her the very presence of the Divine Mother.
On the Phalaharini Kali Puja night of the year 1872, Sri Ramakrishna wished to offer his highest worship. He arranged the puja as is done for Goddess Shodashi (Tripura Sundari), the sixteen-year-old form of the Divine Mother, and seated Sarada Devi on the altar in her place.
Sarada Devi sat in deep calm, and Sri Ramakrishna worshipped her with flowers, offerings, and mantras. He then offered the fruits of all his spiritual practice and his rosary at her feet, saying: "O Auspicious One, giver of all good, refuge of all, I bow to you. Accept this worship, and the fruit of all my sadhana." Both entered a state of deep samadhi (meditative absorption) that lasted through the night.
Since that day, this Amavasya has been called Phalaharini, the Kali who takes away the fruits (phala) of our deeds, and devotees worship Maa Kali on this night to seek her grace and freedom from the burden of karma.
