Mahadana, spoken of simply as a big daan, is a significant act of giving - land, gold, a cow, a building or an endowment made over to a temple, a trust or a person. It is treated as a ceremony in its own right, with a sankalpa naming the giver, the gift and the purpose, so a shubh muhurat is sought for the moment of handing over. A mahadana is one of the classical great gifts, made with water poured over the hand, a sankalpa and usually a short puja, in the presence of the recipient and a priest. Families make one at a milestone birthday, on completing a vow, in memory of a parent, during a pilgrimage, or when a remedial reading calls for a specific dana such as sesame, iron or gold. The giving itself takes a few minutes, but it is customarily set inside a longer morning rite.
