About the Festival

Buddha Purnima is a deeply revered observance celebrated across India and the world, marking the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha. It takes place on the Purnima (full moon day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh.

The Katha (Story of Gautama Buddha)

Long ago, in the town of Lumbini, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to a prince, Siddhartha, in the royal family of the Shakyas. His father, King Shuddhodana, raised him in great comfort, and Siddhartha grew up surrounded by palaces, music, and every luxury.

Yet when he went outside the palace, he saw an old man, a sick man, and a funeral, and then a peaceful wandering monk. Deeply shaken by the sorrow of life, he left his home, his wife Yashodhara, and his son in search of the cause of suffering and its end. For years he practised hard austerities, but found that neither luxury nor self-torture led to peace.

Then he sat beneath the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya and said: "I will not rise from this seat until I find the truth." After a night of deep meditation on the full moon of Vaishakha, he reached enlightenment and became the Buddha, the Awakened One. He taught the path of compassion, right living, and freedom from desire, and later left this world at Kushinagar, again on a full moon. Since that day, devotees have observed Buddha Purnima with prayer, kindness, and charity.

Step 1: Morning Preparation and Sankalp

  1. Wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean white or light-coloured clothes.
  2. Take a small amount of water in your right palm and take a Sankalp (solemn vow): "O Blessed Buddha, today I observe this day with kindness, truthfulness, and non-violence. Guide me on the path of compassion and peace."
  3. Keep a simple sattvic diet through the day, and avoid meat, alcohol, and harsh speech.

Step 2: Preparing the Altar

  1. Clean the northeastern corner (Ishan Kone) or eastern side of your room.
  2. Place the image of the Buddha on a Chowki (wooden stool) covered with a clean white cloth.
  3. Keep a vessel of water, flowers, and fruits near the image.

Step 3: Performing the Rituals

  1. Lighting the Lamp: Light a Diya and incense and place them before the Buddha.
  2. Offering Flowers: Offer fresh white flowers with folded hands.
  3. Offering Naivedya: Offer Kheer and fruits in small portions before the image.

Step 4: Reciting the Story and Teachings

  1. Sit respectfully before the altar and hold a few flower petals in your right hand.
  2. Recite or listen to the story of the Buddha, or the Buddha Vandana (verses of homage), with deep focus.
  3. Offer the petals at the feet of the image and sit in silent meditation for a short while.

Step 5: Charity and Evening Prayers (Moonrise)

  1. Give food, clothes, or money to the needy, and, where possible, free caged birds or feed animals.
  2. At dusk, light lamps at the altar and at the doorway.
  3. When the full Moon rises, offer a prayer of gratitude with folded hands.

Step 6: Seeking Blessings and Closing the Day

  1. Touch the feet of the elders in your family to seek their blessings (Charan Sparsh).
  2. Distribute the Kheer and fruits as prasad among family members and neighbours.
