Puja Vidhi
Who Should Perform This Puja?
- Devotees of Mother Ganga: Devotees bathe in and worship the holy Ganga on her day of rebirth, seeking purification of sins (Papa Mukti) and spiritual merit.
- Families Seeking Blessings: Families pray for health, peace and the wellbeing of their ancestors.
When Should This Be Performed?
- Ganga Snan: The holy dip is taken early in the morning, ideally in Brahma Muhurta (the pre-dawn hour before sunrise). Those who cannot reach the river add Ganga Jal to their bathing water at home.
- Puja Muhurat: The main Ganga Puja is done around Madhyahna (midday). Check the puja muhurat for your city on this page.
- Evening Aarti: In many places, a Ganga Aarti and lamp offering is done at the riverbank in the evening (families differ).
About the Festival
Ganga Saptami, also called Ganga Jayanti, celebrates the rebirth of the holy river Ganga and is observed across North India, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It takes place on the Saptami (seventh day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha.
The Katha (Story of Sage Jahnu and Ganga)
Long ago, King Bhagiratha performed severe penance to bring Mother Ganga from heaven to the earth, so that her waters could free his ancestors. Lord Shiva held the force of her fall in his matted locks, and Ganga then flowed behind Bhagiratha as he led her towards the sea.
While Ganga flowed along, she passed the ashram of the sage Jahnu, who was performing a yagna. Her rushing waters flooded his ashram and swept away his offerings. Angered, the sage Jahnu drank up the whole of Ganga in one sip. Bhagiratha and the gods were dismayed, as the river had vanished before the task was done.
The gods and Bhagiratha prayed to Jahnu with great humility, and they pleaded: "O great sage, forgive her haste and release her, so that the ancestors of Bhagiratha may find peace." Pleased by their devotion, Jahnu released Ganga through his ear. For this reason she is also called Jahnavi, the daughter of Jahnu. Since that day, devotees have observed Ganga Saptami, remembering her rebirth and seeking her blessings.
